You should be able to quadruple your development in a few decades, speed dependent on how often you control the curia. Sell Avignon to Provence or France, make buddy-buddy with Austria, and join the HRE. The biggest, best, most amazing tool you have is curia control and excommunication wars. Excommunicate them (don't use it right before a republican election). Rival the nations you are immediately going to attack, if possible. Hire the best admin advisor you can even if it means nothing for the other 2. Otherwise France will probably attack you sooner or later to grab it.Īdministrative first. The goal should be to use France to help you break the union between Naples and Aragon, and if you can grab some territory from Naples all the better, but you do not want to allow Aragon to inherit Naples.
Personally I would take Defensive first (but then again, I almost always do, regardless of who I am playing), or maybe Diplomacy as the first idea, but you start with a +1 diplomatic rep as a tradition.Īlly France if you can. You should get a mission for Urbino, and especially so if you rival them. I think you will be looking to take Urbino, and as a slightly longer term goal, Naples. It's much more likely you will want to expand in Italy early on, but that's entirely up to you. Unless your opening moves are in to North Africa, Balkans or Ottomans (which would be very difficult indeed), your early wars will see you attempting to take Catholic states.
